VIDEO: NCG guide to Royal Liverpool Hole 17
Hole 17 – Lake
458 yards, par 4
What the players face:
This is a great driving hole that could well separate the great from the good come Open Sunday.
Almost dead straight, a deep, two-tiered green guarded by sand lies in wait at the end of what is usually a lengthy approach.
How to play it:
Running parallel to the 16th but in the opposite direction, the 17th plays into the prevailing south-westerly wind. In such conditions it demands a driver from the tee, otherwise the two-tier green – which is heavily protected at the front – is barely in range even for the elite. Four is always a good score here.
Did you know:
Despite its name, there is no water to negotiate here – it is the bunkers that must be avoided.
