US Open golf: Lee Westwood carrying 2-iron

News & Tour

The former World No 1 has benched his hybrid for a fast-flying long iron

Lee Westwood has been spotted with a Ping i20 2-iron in his bag on the range at Merion this week.

To make room for it, the former World No 1 took out his 19˚ Ping G20 hybrid, seemingly because he was after a lower, faster flight that will roll out for more distance.

This swap is the latest indicator that the rain hasn’t affected Merion too much. If it had become very soft, like most say, logic dictates the Englishman would keep his hybrid in the bag and hit the ball further through the air.

He clearly still sees the course as the fast-running tactician’s paradise that everyone expected.
