OPEN GOLF: Snedeker’s graphite iron shafts

The current Open leader uses very unusual iron shafts. Find out more...

I was watching Brandt Snedeker in action earlier this year and noticed him using graphite shafts in his irons.

I was very confused as graphite iron shafts are normally associated with players who need help launching the ball higher and have slow club speeds.

My grandad uses them, so why would a player in the world’s top 50?

I did some research and found out that the shaft in question – SteelFiber, which is made my a company called AeroTech – is designed to increase distance while maintaining a penetrating ball flight and providing the same feel as steel.

So, basically, that’s the same performance and feel as a steel shaft, but easier to swing and longer. Does it get any better than that?

Snedeker made the switch after hitting shots with Bridgestone stablemate Matt Kuchar’s clubs, while the other top pro using them – Geoff Ogilvy – switched to them after using the shafts in a rental set.
