Choi takes leaf out of Donald’s bookApril, 2012
Defending PLAYERS Champion KJ Choi is hoping Luke Donald's putter will improve his work on the greens…
We’ve all been there – one of your playing partners has a particularly good day on the greens and you find yourself examining his putter and longing for one of your own.
KJ Choi is no different.
The Korean watched on last year as Luke Donald soared to the top of the game thanks, in no small part, to his putting.
Indeed, Donald led putts per green in regulation stats on the European Tour and dominated several PGA Tour categories, including fewest three-putts and strokes gained.
When the Englishman won again at the Transitions championship this year, Choi decided he needed to putt like the World No 2.
So did he seek out Donald’s coach and try to train the same stroke?
No, he went to Odyssey and asked for the same putter.
Yes, Choi went straight to the Odyssey tour truck and had the technicians build him an Odyssey White Hot XG #7 in exactly the same specs as Donald, apart from the grip (KJ likes to use the extra-thick Super Stroke Fatso).
In his first event with it – the Arnold Palmer Invitational – Choi averaged 29.5 putts per round. He took it out of the bag for the Masters – just to be safe – but is still experimenting.
I wonder if we’ll see it at TPC Sawgrass next month…
