TaylorMade’s game-improvement combo set
Combination iron sets, in principle, are a great idea. As you make your way from the long irons to the short, the heads get progressively smaller, giving you forgiveness in the longer clubs, and control in the shorter ones.
Generally speaking, though, most feature short irons that you have to be incredibly talented to handle.
TaylorMade’s new RocketBallz irons work in the same way but offer much more forgiveness throughout the bag.
The brand say they engineered the irons to deliver effortless distance and a high, straight ball flight by incorporating a face that behaves like a driver (flexing on impact to improve ball speed – like a trampoline) and utilising new Toe-Bar technology, which resists clubhead twisting to keep you straight on mis-hits.
The long irons are large and hollow, the mid irons have deep, undercut cavities, and the short irons are compact but also very forgiving.
Other features include an Inverted Cone clubface for high ball speed, and a special design that ensures uniform distance gaps and consistent trajectory.
TaylorMade are extremely confident in their technology. Executive Vice President Sean Toulon said: “Without a doubt, the new RocketBallz iron will be an improvement over any other iron in a golfer’s bag.
“From a technology standpoint, we have done the unthinkable. We brought in metalwood engineers to help create irons with faces that behave like drivers, sending the ball easily high and far almost as if it was bounced off a trampoline. These technological advancements will be visible to the golfer upon first contact with a ball.”
You will have to wait until February to find out.
